FatBike – Biking to Endalen and Mine 5 | 4h

In short: Easy to ride, Flora, Geology, Mining History, World War II.

On this trip you will get a good introduction to many interesting topics here on Svalbard on a relatively longer but very easy bike trip. There will be gravel road all the way and only a slight uphill in the end of the trip up to Mine 5. If you wish to test the bikes it would be possible to continue or ride parts of the trip in the riverbed.

We start in Longyearbyen at your hotel and ride out into Adventdalen. We will pass the dogyards where we can see Eider Ducks until end of June and the Polar Bear Sign. Then we continue past the lake “Isdammen” until we reach the old airport. Here we can experience some World War II history and walk down to the wreckage of an old Luftwaffe airplane. Then we head into Endalen (One-Valley) where we can investigate a part of the coal transportation system and discover many different plants. You can even have a look at what we call “Svalbards only forest” in the Tundra. At the end of the road we will find Mine 5, a now silent evidence of the once prospering coal mining activity on Svalbard. Finally, we return the same way as we came.

Fitness: Little fitness required. If you can ride a bike for some hours, you can do this!

During the trip we offer hot drinks and biscuits. We equip you with helmets, goggles and balaclavas. Dress for some physical activity and bring something extra warm to wear during the stop.
